Kodak Playsport Underwater Video Camera

Kodak Playsport Underwater Video Camera

Technology is a wonderful thing!  The new millennium is finally living up to expectations.  It seems we use our smart phones as computers and cameras more than we use them as telephones these days, but there are still plenty of reasons to carry those other devices.  Kodak packs some major reason in its smart phone sized, economically priced, HD Video Camera.  The Kodak Playsport outclasses FLIP on multiple fronts.  Start with true 1080p HD video, as well as 720p and a 720p (60 frame/sec) mode perfect for shooting sports and fast action.  The Playsport also has a built in image stabilizer which the FLIP does not have.  After doing a good amount of research I was planning on buying Kodak’s Z8i.  For $50 more, it has a better lens, larger screen and macro feature, which the Playsport is lacking.  When I got to the store, right next to the Z8i, sat the brand new Kodak Playsport, which wasn’t on the market when I started researching cameras.  So what convinced me to purchase this one instead of the Z8i?  The biggest feature that sets the Playsport apart from Kodak’s premier Z8i and any of the FLIP models is the ability to shoot HD video UNDERWATER!  For about $150 you have a rugged, pocket sized video camera that works up to 10 feet under water.  When I saw that 2 things came to mind.  Underwater video of the kids playing in the pool, and fish catches and releases.

The built in 5 megapixel still camera may be the downside of the Playsport.    For stills, it won’t replace your DSLR or even a decent pocket camera since there is no flash, and no macro.  The focal length (greater than 3 feet) makes close ups impossible, the digital zoom is a joke and under low light conditions the image quality suffers. Having said that.  With the right light and focal length it takes great images.  Battery life could use some improvement, so try not to preview too much of your work until you get off the water.  There is no question that you could find a better camera to do the same jobs better, like the GoPro with a water housing, but it’s not nearly as compact and it’s over twice the price.  While the first generation Playsport has room for improvement, when you consider that you are getting a true 1080p HD video camera with electronic image stabilization and a 5 megapixel still camera  that  is rugged and can not only handle getting wet from rain and boat spray, it can get completely submerged, you know you are going to take your fishing photo/video gallery to all new territory.  For under $150, if you fish, snorkel, paddle or play anywhere near the water, you should keep a Playsport in your pocket or gear bag.
